On a side note I want to add that I purchased the Micheal Harding gesso you referred to. AMAZING! It’s so rich . I even painted in acrylics yesterday and thought of you. My one question is .. would I be able to use this gesso in lieu of titanium white?

Glad you like it. Yes you can use it for your white. In school we used it for the white when painting with acrylic and gouache. If you use it with gouache you will lock the gouache down of course.

I hope you are both better. Sorry to hear. I was wondering about gesso as well. Thanks for clarifying.

Hope you feel better soon. Thanks for sharing the work of Charles Movalli. His name rang a bell so I googled him and found out the he helped Emile Gruppe with the book, Brushwork: A Guide to Expressive Brushwork for Oil Painting. I have a copy of the book and it is very good.

Yep, he wrote a bunch of articles and books. Also wrote the Paul Strisik book The Art of Landscape Painting. That book taught me more about painting than any book had to date. It was back in the day when you had to build your own tripod pochade box if you wanted one, because there wasn't a market for that sort of equipment, other than a few outdoor easels and French easel types. It's a great book! https://www.amazon.com/art-landscape-painting-Paul-Strisik/dp/082300273X

Thanks for mentioning Charles Movalli. I have 3 or 4 books from his wife that she sent me. I love his work. I also have a large collection of his works from the internet. He is so bold with his approach. I chatted with Staplenton Kearns about him. He said he didn't follow the scene that much. I would love to learn how he painted. Are you going to keep mentioning him? I would up grade my level for sure.

Just that you are one amazing person, Marc. Thank you ...... Thank you... and your ability to write is as excellent, as your ability to paint! Unbelievable ❤️

Thanks very much, Marc! Movalli’s paintings exude joy - his artworks look like gleeful expressions in paint!!! I’ll have to check out the videos you recommended on YouTube. Hang in there; we, too, thought we’d duck Covid but I contracted it at a plein air event (go figure) and brought it home to my husband. We recovered fully in about 3-4 weeks. Don’t push the recovery. Rest when your body tells you. I’m sure you and Dottie will feel better soon! Take care.

Two things....Charles Movalli wrote a lot for American Artist magazine which I saved over the years. I went through them and tore out many of his articles, so good! Threw away much of the rest!

Also, I am fighting through Long Covid after having a month of dragging....so don't try to recover too fast, take your time and get some rest in, it takes time to recover and people don't realize how easily you can slip into Long Covid, not fun!!

Thank you, Diane! Getting better. Yes, he had a BA from Clark University and a PhD (in literature I believe) from the University of Connecticut.

Covid is a bummer. Stay well.

To break down a bigger shape of a single color…say a solid color boat hull or a long deck next to a boat as shown in photos above…using “Broken Color” is an art. Would love to have you talk to us about mixing puddles of same value but different colors. Mixing enough to finish an area. It is easier to do with oils than with acrylics which start to dry too fast. Maybe discussing “broken color” using oils compared to acrylic? I took screen shots of Movalli’s work to refer to later. You presented great examples.

Good ideas, Nyla! If I take this Substack platform further, taking it to a "lesson" sort of a teaching platform might not be a bad idea. I'm on here because I like user friendly it is. For more direct teaching, there might be better platforms like Patreon, Zoom, etc.. I'll be looking into it all as time goes along. Thank you!

Sorry to hear you and Dottie got the C, and glad you are recovering well. Say, what was the cold pressed watercolor board you painted on? Haven't heard of that.

Thank you, Kori! There are many different types of cold, hot and plate finish water color boards available. Most are probably an illustration board, since illustrators and graphic artists like their work on a stiffer backing. Two that you can google are Crescent Art Boards and Cottonwood Arts cold pressed water color board. The Crescent boards are readily available many places but I usually get them at a Blick store, or online from them.

Thank you! There's a lot of joy in his work. If you search his name on Youtube you'll find a handful of videos of him talking about painting and his life. All a great watch.

Thanks Marc for sharing Charles Movalli. I don't think I have really have looked at his work in detail yet, but I'm going to now. While the Canadian fires are very bad, they are setting up some very amazing golden hour scenes with heavy atmosphere.

Agreed about the color of the light from the fires. A hard gift to accept. :) Enjoy Movalli!

Thank you, Donna. I thought we were going to make that rarified crowd of those who avoided it... not so. You sort of get over it, but not really, not yet. I get it now when people talked about how it lingers and fatigues you. It's true.

I can def see the Movalli influence in your single acrylic from last week. Simplicity! Shapes! Every stroke counts.
