I can’t tell you how wonderful it is to watch you paint. I live on a small island in Greece and I am the only artist in the area. Nearly everything I learn is online, so I don’t care that the video got cut off at the end. I am so grateful to be able to sit with you in this space and learn from you. Thank you!
Question: is this a morning sky color? how do you decide how you will depict the sky I e how much of your decision is is based on what you’re looking at in that moment and how much is altered and constructed to help the overall effect of the finished painting you are going after?
Thank you Vida! I guess that this is the real marvel that this technology is creating for us all. I’m so glad to hear your thoughts. For me, making these and adding audio is very close to in person demoing. Maybe better because I’m not getting sidetracked. I do miss the interaction of the in person experience, that’s hard to beat. But this is a close second. Makes me very happy to know that it’s meaningful to you and others.
The sketch was painted late afternoon, looking to the southwest. The choice of color is entirely made based on my desire to learn about the situation. So I use color to enhance whatever that is. Not to change it as much as to understand the dynamics of how all the color in the scene relates to the overall effect I’m looking at. I am not copying each color, I’m using them as a guide to choosing a color palette that reflects the impression I have in what I’m looking at. I’ve found that my instinctive mixing, based on my experiences in observing and painting color from life, combine to give me a solution. Hope that helps.
Hi Marc! I'm really enjoying these. Thank you for your inspiration by the shear fact you are opening yourself to this mode of teaching. Really cool. Are you using iMovie for your editing software? I would also like to figure out how to get a picture in picture thingy with the palette in the video. People can learn so much watching the mixing process.
Hey Shelby! Nice to hear from you. I am using iMovie. I looked into other editing apps but since I have it, I decided to try to figure it out. I have learned that to do the palette Picture in Picture, I’d have to hook up another camera. Makes sense. That would be easier than painting with the phone on a tripod between my arms for sure. I’m
Not sure I’m coordinated enough to manage both! Lol Actually adding it would be easy. I see that there’s a menu control to add it in. Next demo I’m going to try.
Kjempe bra Marc! I really enjoyed watching you paint, when I was wondering how you make decisions about brushes and brushwork you started talking about it, it was just perfect (not getting clean lines with raggedy brushes!). It was mesmerising to watch, and is even making me think about painting again. There's a poetry in how you created this, and a deftness of practice. Glad I subscribe! Now I need to invest some time in actually doing :) Helen
Hi Helen... Thank you! If these get you painting again I've gotten more out of all this than you. That's so rewarding to hear. Thanks for sharing and I do hope you get painting again soon.

Mesmerizing. Thanks for inspiring us! Great reminder to maintain your darks.
Thank you for the opportunity to see you work. I love the knife work for the hard edges.
